The Eiffel Tower in Paris was 312.2 m high when it was first built. An antenna brings it up to 318.7 m. There are 1665 steps up to the top. It was made from 18,038 pieces of iron, held together by 2,500,000 rivets. It was built in 1889 for the exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) was the most successful engineer of the day, building not only the Eiffel Tower but New York's Statue of Liberty too.
