It's been quite some time since I've been here with words to share. But I've been an extremely busy boy. Actually, I've been running full tilt now for the past three years, chasing that elusive dream I'd so long been in search of, courting and wooing and winning the heart on an Anghel who lived half-a-world away from me. But yes, I can truly say now that dreams really do come to be reality. And on this day, 5-February 2012, I celebrate a dream come true, the first anniversary of my marriage to the founder of this blog, Lynndee. Getting to this day has been an exciting odyssey, a journey of thousands of miles over many roads, sweet and beautiful as well as bumpy and dusty. The most wonderful part of it all, though, has been that she has been with me every mile, every step of the way, sharing the joy, beauty and mystery of a love so rare. With that being so, I want to share with her, and the rest of the world, some simple words to express my love for the lady who is now my wife as we begin our second year of a journey to forever, together. He’s a Timely Little Boy

One of the many gifts that we gave our son for Christmas was a wrist watch. It is a black watch with a velcro tape lock. My husband was the one who chose it and our son really likes it. It was his first time to have such kind of watch and he finds the Velcro tape really dandy because it is much easier to close compared to his previous watch. He’s enjoyed it from that day on and he never leaves the house without it.

Bad Fork Valley Overlook

Among the overlooks, I would say this one has the nicest view. See the mountains and the different colored trees? That is definitely stunning, isn't it? Breathtaking, if I may add.

I know it would be much nicer if I used a DSLR camera, but I only have a digital camera. But still, I know you can tell that it's really beautiful out there. Do you agree?

Be Protected, Just in Case the Worst Happens

Injuries at work and vehicular accidents are just some of the news that we hear almost everyday. It is very sad to see such and I feel sorry for the victims. I know it can be heartbreaking. Just watching it is already breaking my heart, much less what it does to the victims.

I know things such as insurance will help them get back on track, but there are times when doctors who treat victims become the victims themselves when they get sued. No Need to Seek When it’s Right Before Your Eyes

Shopping online has been my only option in ordering gifts for my husband and my son or whenever I feel like shopping for myself. And that is because I don’t drive yet. I still have to learn and get a license.

Nevertheless, shopping online is something that I find really fun not to mention, very convenient. I never got to do this back in my home country, thus, I am enjoying it immensely. Aside from the fact that I am always satisfied with my orders, looking forward to seeing the UPS truck drive in our drive way is one thing that I find exciting too.

Good thing we have a nice Address Plaque that the husband installed years back so my orders never get lost and they always come on time. I think the delivery man is thankful for that plaque because I know not all addresses are visible enough for them to easily see. They can thank my smart husband for that. (“,)

French Broad Overlook

This was the first overlook at the Blue Ridge Parkway and yes, the first one that we checked. There were a lot of tourists that day enjoying the scenery like we did.

You can see the French Broad River in this photo. It is a long river that runs to Tennessee and different other states.

Being the always curious him, he read all the stuff written on that board about the river.

Don’t Let the Sun Get in Your Eyes!

I didn’t bring a lot of stuff with me when I moved here to the U.S. That being so, there were always things for me to buy whenever the season changed. We arrived here in the fall of 2010 so the day following our arrival was spent shopping for clothes and shoes to keep me and my son warm.

When summer arrived, one of the things to buy on the list was a pair of sunglasses. I left my pair of replica sunglases back home so I got me a new pair here - some Vera Vera Wang sunglasses. I’ve been using them since. It’s one of the things that I can’t leave home without, especially when the sun is out.

Gifts From Afar

Browsing online has been a part of my day-to-day routine lately and that is because I am searching for gifts for my family back home. It is my goal to send them a package this year from the land of Uncle Sam. I have been wanting to do it since late last year, but we simply didn’t get the chance because we were busy with a lot of things.

I already ordered online the things that my mom and dad wanted, and today, I am looking for nursing uniforms for my nurse brother and toys and books for my toddler nephew and niece. I find it easier to browse online because I can look at a lot of products and stores by just sitting with no need to walk miles. LOL.Anyway, I am still looking and comparing prices. I will be done soon.

Big Ridge Overlook

I've been talking about our trip to Blue Ridge Parkway on my previous posts and here's another overlook that we stopped in. There were many of them, but we only chose those with great views. Some of the overlooks were covered with trees so you can't really see much.

There was a description on why this was called Blue Ridge overlook, but I totally forgot. Sorry about that. Maybe you just have to read it once you get to visit the place one day. (",)

This beautiful tree here was located at the side of the overlook sign board. It was the first thing that caught my attention as soon as we parked, but sorry once again. I have no idea what this tree is. Tell me if you do.

I Wish I Could Spend Those Pesos Here!

I cleaned up our dresser today and my husband still has bills and coins from my home country, the Philippines, that he brought back to the US on our trip here. We didn’t spend it all while we were in Manila so I think they’ll have to wait until we go back to my home country again to get their money back…LOL! He doesn’t want to have it changed at the bank due to exchange fees.

Seeing it reminds me of the coin collection I had while in grade school. I had pen-pal friends from Canada and the U.S.A. at that time and we exchanged coins to add to our collections. I kept them through the years, but I left them back home when I came to the US. They will be there when we go back to visit anyway, so I decided to leave them. I am thinking of adding more to it. How I wish I could have one of those Golden eagle gold coins. That would be an awesome addition, but I don’t think I can afford to have one. Or can I? (“,)

Looking Glass Rock

This is part of the Blue Ridge Parkway that amazes people. I was amazed myself. This huge rock is situated in the middle of all those mountains. It looked like an animal laying down or sleeping from afar. Do you think so too?

And did you known why it is called the "Looking Glass Rock"? It is because during winter, when the rock is full of ice, it looked like a glass from afar. How I wish I would be able to see that this winter. But I do wonder if I will stand the temperature there by that time. We went there in early August and it is already chilly and that is because it is situated thousands of feet above see level. How much more during winter.

Wishing, Hoping and Dreaming Big

Having an RV is one among the many dreams that I have. But I didn’t have that dream until we went on a 9-hour road trip. And that was during our summer trip to Washington, D.C. I seen a lot of RV’s on the road of different sizes. I guess it would be nice to take a road trip where you could lie down and nap. Sitting on a long trip is very exhausting, thus it made me wish to have one.

But it is only a dream for now. Wait until we’ll win the lottery, and that is when I will start checking for rv travel emergency coverage after we get our RV, because I do know how important it is based on what I’ve read on the web. Wish us luck on the lottery. Oh, I should get a ticket, shouldn’t I? Teehee.

Receiving gifts never fail to brighten my day, most especially if there is no occasion. Then it definitely is a total surprise. My husband knows so well how I love surprises and that is why he sometimes gets one for me even without it being a special occasion.

And just like him, I love giving surprises too. I love the look on his face whenever he’s surprised. I am actually thinking of giving him a surprise today after seeing the array of just because gifts that I had stumbled upon. He would be delighted, no doubt and I can’t wait to see that look of delight on his face.

Tunnel Ahead

We traveled to one of the Tourist Destinations here in the city a month ago and this photo was just one of the many photos that I captured. The place is popularly known as 'Blue Ridge Parkway' and people visit the place during Autumn which is certainly the best time to see the beauty of the mountains.

It was a long travel. I think it took us an hour or so to reach the end of the parkway and this tunnel here is only one among the many tunnels that we went through. I lost count, but I think there were more than ten tunnels all in all, some are short and some are long. The long ones were kind of scary because it was too dark.

See the color of the trees. I think this photo didn't do justice, but it was really beautiful and fascinating. I was in awe, really!!!

I Miss ‘Em All

Since I left my home country, my communication with my family there has been through online video calls. It is for free so no problem at all. But video conference isn’t free so I have to talk to them all at different times; my sister’s and her family, my brother and his family, and my mom and dad. It would be nice if we all got to talk at the same time.

I did check on conference calling services, and though it is affordable, it is still out of the budget. We just have to make use of what we have now. The most important thing is, we still get to talk, no matter what.

A New Friend Was My Treat

We went trick or treatin’ at a nearby neighborhood on Halloween. It was chilly that night and I was really freezing, but it didn’t stop the kids at all. I think I was the only one who felt so cold. Good thing one of the residents invited us to their house while the kids were busy collecting candy.

And I had fun talking to the woman of the house. She is taking a nursing course, thus, we had fun talking because I once took the course too, but only for a year. I changed courses after realizing that wasn’t for me. I can’t stand seeing blood at all. I would probably faint witnessing an Open back surgery like a girlfriend of mine who did. Besides, it wasn’t really my choice. I didn’t know then what I really wanted.

It was really nice to meet and talk to someone who has got the same interests as you are. I do hope I can talk to her again soon. Probably next Halloween. LOL.

Lovely Maple Tree Colors

This was taken in our backyard a couple of days ago. Our yard is surrounded by a lot of different kinds of trees. We have maple, oak, hickory, pine tree and more. I don't know the names of the rest of them.

It was chilly outside when I took this photo, but I dealt with it because I really wanted to take a photo of the trees and its leaves. The colors were just lovely; peach (I guess), orange, yellow, brown and perhaps light pink. I'm not sure about the exact colors, but I guess you can tell on the photo.

The leaves still look pretty on the ground, but I know it won't be too long. They will get dry and of course, the best thing to do is get rid of them. Well, my husband will simply blow them away. (",)

Homework Wars Before War Games

My son has been so into the computer that he got scolded by his dad because he plays first before doing his homework. He even asked his dad the other day to buy him Gears of War 3 xbox 360, but his dad made a deal with him. He has to do his homework first before playing. He has to show it to dad and prove that he done it, and continue to do so, and then he will get his desired gift on Christmas.

So far, he has been a good little boy. I hope he will continue to be like that so Santa will be happy too.

I Have Design on My Mind

Watching HGTV is one of the many things that occupies my daily schedule. I think I have always been a frustrated interior designer. I’ve always wanted to be one since I was in high-school, but it simply didn’t happen.But though I didn’t get that career, I still consider myself an interior designer in my own home. And that is why I love watching HGTV because I get a lot of decorating ideas from their shows. The transformations that they did in homes even in those homes for rent are simply amazing.

I already did some repainting here at home and have more design ideas, but I still have even more things in mind to do. But one step at a time. Slowly but surely, right?

Graveyard View

I attended a baby shower last month and it was held at the Fellowship Hall of the church where the one that we showered was a member, her husband being the Reverend there actually.

My husband just left me there with my son and he picked us up afterwards. We were at the parking lot when my son requested to check the graveyard beside the church. He has always been curious about it, and my husband being always attentive and giving about his whims, he gladly obliged.

I was just watching them at first while they walked and checked each tombstone. Later on, I decided to check it myself. I was wearing my heels and the graveyard was located on a hill that was why I was hesitating to go up. But look what I've discovered while on the graveyard...an amazing site of the mountains.

My Poor Mouth

I’ve been suffering from sensitive teeth lately and I am being careful whenever I eat. I make sure I don’t chew on the part where I have the sensitive teeth which are my two molars in the left side. I can still bear it though so seeing a dentist isn’t in my plans yet. I am trying to look for medicines to at least lessen the sensitivity, but more often than not, the search engine takes me to wholesale dental supplies.

I know I need to do more searching and maybe in time I’ll get what I am looking for. Wish me luck!

This was during my husband's company's picnic. Though they had the picnic every year, it was the first time that they played bingo. I have always enjoyed playing bingo though I haven't won even once. I don't really mind. What's important is the fun and excitement that it brings. And yes, we didn't win at this one too. We were almost there though. Just almost. LOL.

My Hubby is a Fix-it Type-of-Guy

I am clueless when it comes to anything that has something to do with electronics. One time, the television just shut off without me touching anything. I thought that maybe a cable wire had loosened up somewhere, but though I had that feeling, I didn’t have the guts to check and find out what was wrong.

I waited for the husband and let him fixed it. I missed my favorite show, but no problem. I’d rather miss it than get electrocuted by touching the wrong thing. LOL.

But I was wrong. The cable wire wasn’t only loose, but it needed a replacement. The husband realized that after he checked the wire using his cable tester. What a useful tool. These two portable toilets were rented by my husband's company when they had their company picnic last September 10. And I finally got to try it though I can say, after using it, it is not something that I would really choose if I only had options.

I am small, but the inside still seemed too small for me. And though they put something there so it won't smell, still, it is not a good sight inside. But for emergency, these toilets will do. (",)

He Works So Hard

Our Saturday was not spent the usual way. Me and my son just stayed at home and that is because the husband was not around. He had overtime since Friday night until Sunday. Gladly, we still have enough food in the fridge to last us until early this week.

There were plans that we made earlier last week that were canceled and that is because of the abrupt decision of his boss to do the work last weekend. Aside from grocery shopping, we were supposed to check for tablet computers and also house decors that we’ve been wanting to get.

Well, it can wait until next weekend. No problem. His work is more important than those things, and besides, with all the overtime, there’ll be more money to spend on the goodies I want…(“,)

Our Family is Growing

It was a week after my birthday when I received the baby shower invitation from my husband‘s ‘niece-in-law‘. I actually thought it was a birthday card when my husband handed the envelop to me. I was surprised that it was an invitation for her baby shower.

She is due to give birth in November so while opening the card, I thought that maybe they are sending the baby shower invitations early and the shower will be in a month or so. But it will be next week, Sunday, the 25th.

I already responded to the R.S.V.P. that I am going to attend. My gift is ready, but my outfit is yet to be shopped for. Hehe. I can hardly wait for the shower. It will be fun, I know.

The Saga of Neely Tweed

Much of history is shrouded in the mists of time, full of legends and myths that can create misunderstandings, especially when it comes to family history, which in most instances is passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. A case in point is the article I wrote about one of my ancestors from the Hendersonville area who supposedly buried a kettle of gold in the Flat Rock area, still yet to be discovered. And the tale is still told that he haunts the area, either guarding his stash or looking for it himself.

Such apocryphal tales can make digging for the facts a daunting task. But then…..then there are occasions that have been documented as pure fact that are cut and dry and cannot be denied, despite the fact that said history could be considered a blemish on the family name. Such a tale is that of my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Neely Tweed, from the lineage of my father’s mother, who was, by definition, a murderer. There is, however, a story to tell that puts it all in context and basically removes the blight from the family tree, for Neely was truly a fine, upstanding man, a servant to the people of his community, and his legacy lives on to this day because his actions, true as they are documented, also made him the stuff of legend.

But the saga begins even earlier than Neely, going back to between 1790-1795 when his Grandfather, William Tweed – my great times 5 grandfather – made the perilous journey from Dublin, Ireland, to America, landing in Charleston, SC. Accompanying him was his wife, son Jimmy and daughter Isabel, as well as Peggy Neely, a young woman who was with child out of wedlock. She gave birth at sea to a daughter, Rachel.

Ironically, later on, Jimmy Tweed married Rachel Neely and they moved from South Carolina to Cane River, NC, in Yancy County, then relocated to White Rock in what is now Madison County, NC. They had six sons, the first one being Neely, born in 1816, his given name being the maiden name of his mother.

On May 13, 1861, shortly after the first shots of the war were fired on Fort Sumter, there was a statewide referendum held to elect delegates to go to Raleigh and vote on whether North Carolina would secede from the Union to join the Confederate States, or stay in the Union. Back in that day, any election was known to be a time that good ol’ moonshine likker was freely passed around. Even my Great-Grandfather, Robert Maxwell Reese, an upstanding member of his church, a deacon and all, was known to come home from the polls with a spirit other than that of God wafting from his mouth, much to the chagrin of his Godly wife. And on this day, not only was the moonshine flowing freely, but tensions were running high and total chaos ruled in the streets.

By this time, Neely was in his mid-40s, a family man with eleven children with his wife Lucinda expecting number twelve, and had made his mark by becoming the first Clerk of Superior Court in Madison County as well as a Justice of the Peace. During his official duties, there had been times he and County Sheriff Ransom Merrill had not seen eye-to-eye. And on this chaotic day, there was even more reason for a disagreement.

Merrill was a staunch secessionist, as opposed to Neely and most of the other Tweeds, who being simple, non-slave-owning mountain farmers felt that they had no dog in this fight and were expected to vote pro-Union. With all the arguing and drinking going on in the town square, Merrill, a hard drinker himself, chose this time to approach Neely and his 21-year-old son Elisha to espouse his cause and question their intentions. Words were exchanged leading the sheriff to pull his gun and shoot, wounding Elisha in the arm and side. He then ran down the street, entering a house and going to the second floor to a window overlooking the street. But he should have been watching his back because Neely had chased him, and upon entering the room where the sheriff was leaning out the window yelling, "Come up here all you Black Republicans and take a shot about with me!" Neely did just that and shot him dead.

Knowing the dire consequences facing him, Neely fled back to his home in White Rock, hiding out for almost a year. A $400 Dollar reward for his capture was posted. Unfortunately, his brother Joshua, as is told in family oral history, was “…"repeatedly hung by the neck. Strung up then let down by bushwhackers."; bushwhackers most likely being the home guard as depicted in the movie Cold Mountain, or just opportunists seeking information of Neely’s whereabouts so they could claim the reward. But after not getting the information they wanted, they strung him up one last time for good. Events such as this and Neely’s shooting of the sheriff, as well as the infamous Shelton Laurel Massacre led to this county being called Bloody Madison. So in March of 1862, to escape the heat and danger of capture, Neely cut and run and headed for Kentucky where his brothers Abner Grainger (A.G.) and John, along with his son Elisha, recovered from the near fatal wounds inflicted by Sheriff Ransom, had joined the 4th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. On April 15, 1862, at Camp Garber in Flat Lick, Kentucky, Neely enlisted into the same unit as his brothers and son, only to die six days later of yellow fever, on the date and at the time he predicted his death would occur, according to family history. Of all the facts of this tale, his telling of this boding is the only one that smacks of myth or legend, for many members of the Tweed family wonder at that tale.

Elisha buried his father in an unmarked grave and the war went on. Of Neely’s other brothers, John was detached from his unit for Special Service to make raids inside the enemy's lines and destroy bridges and bring out recruits from Madison County. Thomas joined the Union Army, fought and was captured and held for a year before release, but died within a month due to malnutrition and the beatings he received while imprisoned. Reuben sat out the war, only to have his sons fight for the Confederacy. Three of six, Neely, Joshua and Thomas, died due to war related causes, while John, A.G. and Reuben lived to ripe old ages and saw the turn of the century. Ironically, A.G. became the sheriff of Madison County, and like Andy Taylor of Mayberry, he never carried a gun. When questioned why he went unarmed, he replied, "Because I can have a man whipped before he can get a gun out of his belt." And as for Neely’s Wife, Lucinda, she lived till she was 92, dying after breaking her back staking out a cow.

Having known this saga for years, it was only by happenstance that I got to chase down a bit of history. This past May, my stepson asked me to drive him to Kentucky to pick up a vehicle he was buying. The first thing that popped into my mind was Flat Lick, Kentucky, and on checking the road atlas, I found that it was near our destination. Voila! And it was also the opportunity to introduce my new family to that great American institution: ROAD TRIP! So off we went, in search of the past.

It was a perfect spring day and the drive into Tennessee where the new I-26 had been cut through the mountains was a magnificent sight. And once in Kentucky, traveling on the old two lane roads cut through the rolling hills, it being coal country, we could see the black veins of ore coursing through the land. Once finished with my stepson’s business it was on to Flat Lick.

We found it to be quintessential small-town America; one red light, a small elementary school and a post office being the highlights. I had vague directions to the location of Camp Garber but had no luck in locating it, and surprisingly, none of the locals had ever heard of it. But by logic and deduction, I determined we’d driven right by, it now being fenced in farm land and pasture, under which lies an untold number of Civil War soldiers, forever to be unmarked and unknown; except to me, and a few others, that is.

The drive home was the perfect ending to a perfect day, coming back through Knoxville and the beautiful Pigeon River Gorge. My wife was amazed with the highways and interstate system as compared to the roads in her country, and she was in awe of our majestic mountains.

But other road trips are on the horizon in this quest. There’s yet much more of the Tweed legacy to be found right here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Neely’s parents, James and Rachel, are buried in a family graveyard in Madison County, as well as his brother Thomas. And his wife Lucinda is buried at Tweed Chapel Cemetery. The location of Sheriff Ransom Merrill’s grave is known, and the house in which Neely shot the sheriff still stands on Main Street in Marshal. And just for the sake of myth and legend, it’s told that the sheriff’s ghost still looks out that window, keeping its eyes on the town in which he failed his duty of keeping order in on the day of his death. So what better way to acknowledge this 150th anniversary of the Civil War than to load up and hit the road again in search of family legacy, right in my own backyard?

The More I Save, the More I Can Spend

Even before I arrived here in the United States, I was already aware of how beneficial collecting coupons could be. It’s not something that we do in my home country, but my friends who are residents here told me about it.

I consider myself frugal. I always look for something so I can save and that goes to shopping for just about anything, which includes groceries, and that is why I always look for coupons. We do get many in our mailbox almost every single day, but I am also getting more online. And so far, so good. The husband was actually happy about what I saved because he’s not been into it until I got here.

He’s Not Getting Older, Just Better

My dad turned 65 years old this past May. Some already consider it there retirement age, but not for him. As he often tells us, as long as his mind and body can still do the hard work that he’s been doing for years, he will continue doing it. That is how much he loves his job. He is a contractor and he also draws plans and makes estimates. I believe that will be good for him since his mind will be constantly at work. He is a smart guy and it is good that he will use what he knows as long as he can.

So that means we are not going to look into retirement gifts just yet. But if ever he changes his mind it is always easy to grab one because I already know one website or online store that offers a wide array of gifts to choose from. And I already have an idea what gift he would really like. He will be glad he retired once he sees the gift. Heehee.

Mansions on the Hill

These views were taken from the car park of our favorite supermarket. We go grocery shopping every week so we see this beautiful view every week too. Yes, I had been seeing it, but it was only recently that I finally took a photo of it.

Those houses on top of the hill are mansions. As my husband told me, the hill belongs to the rich. I haven't been in that part of the city and knowing that it's a millionaire's village, I have this urge to see the place. I would love to see the houses.

Any one is free to go there anyway, unlike in my home country where the villages where the millionaires live have security guards and you can't just go in not unless you know anybody from the village. I can't blame them. Their safety is important.

My Forgetful Li’l Boy

I really worried a lot earlier when my son called to inform me that the bus didn’t drop him off at the street corner because I wasn’t there. My son was supposed to call me so I would know when the bus was leaving school and that’s when I would go to the street corner. But he got so distracted playing with his classmates inside the bus that he forgot to call me.

I talked to the bus driver, but he told me that I’d just have to pick my son up at the school because he was not going back to our place anymore. It really worried me so much that I felt like I lost weight in an instant. I won’t be needing fat burners if my son will continue to do this.

I called my husband to pick him up after he got off work and was relieved when the husband called the school and informed me that our son was staying in the principal’s office and would be waiting for him. Whew! What a day!

I talked about mine and my husband's date where we had these food, but before we were able to enjoy their sumptuous food, we had to wait for twenty minutes because the place was jam-packed.

We went to Red Lobster - a famous seafood restaurant here. We had to wait outside, but no biggy because they have benches where customers could sit. Also, they have this gadget that I've included below that will inform the custmers if there is already a free table waiting for them.

Cool, isn't it? It beeped and there was a blinking red light on top. We never had this in my country that is why I really found it fascinating.

I finally found the photo that I knew I took. I did mention previously about the postcards that our good friend, Ms. Carol sent us when she had her recent vacay in South Carolina with her youngest daughter and her family. The previous photo that I share was the vacation she had before this. That was in Hilton Head, South Carolina and this one here was in Charleston, South Carolina.

She sent us bunches of postcards once again. And as always, my son was so delighted because he's got mail. Two postcards were mailed with his name on it and the three was for me and the husband.

Charleston they say is one of the most beautiful places they have here. The husband told me, we'll surely go there someday because he's got a lot of things to show me. It's about a 6 hour drive from our city so, no biggy. I can't wait to see the place. You can really tell how nice the place is just by looking at these postcards.

Our good friend, Ms. Carol whom we also consider as family is such a traveler. She loves traveling and for this year alone, she had been to three known places already. And what's good about it is we get to see the places she visited too. The only difference was that, we only see it from the postcards she sends us. She never fails to forget sending not just one, but a lot of postcards. My son, Yogi was so happy whenever he gets one. He was like, "I got mail!"

After six months of being married, the husband and I finally got a chance to have a date - just the two of us, of course. Gladly, his stepson agreed that my son would have a sleepover at their house that night and we never got problems with my son too. He obediently obliged because he's got playmates there.

Anyway, we went to have dinner - which I will post on my food and living blogs soon - and afterwards, we watched a movie. I've been wanting to watch the new film 'Friends With Benefits' which stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis because it is fun as I have heard. And they're right, the movie is hilarious!

The husband arrived yesterday with good news. And because of that, the coming days will be busy for us. Lots of things to do which include much paperwork and the like. Surprising Visitors

Can you see the doe and her little fawn? There were two fawns actually, but I guess the other one was wandering somewhere. This was in our front yard and I took the photo from our bedroom window. I went to the backyard hoping to catch a more clearer photo, but they ran after seeing me.

Hmmm…camacho triple maduro. You probably think I am speaking a different language, huh? Well, yeah, it does sound Spanish to me, but actually, I am just talking about the name of a cigar. We went to the mall yesterday to buy more things that the little one will need for school when we passed by a tobacco store and saw the sign. We were curious so, we checked inside to find out what it was.

Well, we don’t smoke cigars so I think it is given that we are ignorant when it comes to them. LOL. Curiosity does help us learn things, though. So, curiosity doesn’t always kill the cat. Teehee.

That Ol’ Jet Lag Can Be a Drag

I certainly love traveling because seeing new places and meeting new people is one thing that I do find exciting. But there’s one thing that I don’t like about it - the unpacking part which is a necessary evil when it comes to traveling and moving.

We moved here to the U.S. last fall and guess what? I didn’t bet our luggage unpacked until three days after we touched down. It’s unusual for me because even though I don’t like unpacking, I usually get it done ASAP so it will be out of the way. But I had a jet lag and was dizzy as soon as we set our foot on the U.S. soil. The 22 hour trip totally took its toll on me.

Yes, moving can be tiring, but not really that much now given the many people who are willing to give their services to make your move worry and hassle free. I am talking about a total move, moving to a new location and new home. Mine was different because my husband’s home was already waiting for us.

But you do know that looking for our dream house is already in the works and being made easier with the internet, and there are numerous people who are willing to help us every step of the way just to fulfill that dream. For example, if you are looking for a house for rent in Calgary, everything is laid in front of you on the internet. Isn’t life just great?!

Very Useful Goodies

We were on our way out after being done with shopping for groceries and the little one's school things when we found out that it was raining heavily outside. I don't want to run in the rain and get soaked because I might multiply. LOL. Seriously, it was so heavy, everybody was near the exit waiting for the rain to slow down a bit before going to their cars.

The husband and my son was at the door. I stayed near the carts and busied myself taking photos of any thing that I find nice. That's why I always bring my digicam with me so, I will be ready if it's needed.

We've been to Walmart several times, but that was the only time that I noticed this container of sanitizer that is for everyone to use. I really wasn't paying attention to details, was I? Thanks to the rain. Hee hee. This is really a great idea when it comes to sanitation. We don't have this kind in my home country. Kudos to Walmart for that!

And here's another great goodie. This was placed near the sanitizer. If the woman employee didn't offer one of the customers this bag, I wouldn't have noticed too. Thanks to the rain again! LOL.

The Weekend is Mine

Each and everyone of us needs a breather from time to time. Whether you’re a to-go girl or a stay-at-home wife and mom, everyone needs a break. I know this because I belong to the latter and I always look forward to unwinding on the weekend with no chores in mind and just thinking of relaxing and pampering myself. We all deserve it because everyday for all of us is a challenge. Life at times seems like never ending work.

And relaxing to me means watching TV with the husband or simply talking with him on just about anything. But pampering to me is more elaborate. A spa perhaps? Blue and Purple

Our neighbor's 8-year-old daughter surprised me with these flowers one day a few weeks ago. She picked it from her mom's garden to give to me. Isn't she sweet? I really didn't expect it.

They are small flowers, but they are really beautiful. I asked her what kind of flowers they are, but she didn't know. The size of these flowers are only about an inch in diameter. Really cute.

I put them in a small vase and placed the vase in the middle of our dining table. They stayed there for like a week.

4th of July Goodies

It was a few days before the fourth of July celebration when we saw these goodies here.

A fireworks store that was located in front of the supermarket that we frequents. I was really surprised when I saw it because I never thought they are selling fireworks here too like in my home county.

And this was inside the supermarket. Aren't the balloons lovely? I was going to grab me one, but changed my mind eventually.

It was during the gala night of the Alumni Reunion in Virginia when a family friend handed this to me. I was really surprised and at the same time delighted. I left the rosaries that my girlfriends gave me back in my home country which I really find strange. There were two of them and I put them on my dresser while packing and yet, I totally forgot about it.

We were in Washington, D.C. for four days. Our last day being Sunday, we spent it by attending a mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I am Catholic by faith and the beauty of the church as well as the mass was really overwhelming. We were there a little early so since it was our first time to be there, we checked what the church has to offer.

Purple Cone Flower

As soon as summer started, I was so eager to start a flower garden. The husband started on a planter project, but he wasn't able to finish it just yet because he has been busy with work and there were times that he was ready to rumble, but the weather didn't allow him.

For a start, I had this cutie grow kit instead. Our neighbor gave this to us so I can have at least a flower, even small, that I can put either inside the house or the patio.

I sent my friend a message on Facebook and I was wondering what was taking her so long to respond. I knew she was already up because she had forwarded an e-mail to me a few minutes earlier. I thought she was busy with something only to find out that her acer notebook was acting up again. She had to call me because I bombarded her with messages on Facebook.

She has a feeling that she needs new acer batteries. I told her at least she didn’t need a new notebook, but only batteries so it’s not really a pain in the pocket. But she was so pissed that she said she’d rather buy a new notebook than buy new batteries. Whatever!

How ‘Bout Dem Heels?

Among the many sports, it is basketball that I really enjoy watching the most. I shout at the top of my lungs whenever the game gets exciting and I will even spend my time eating my meal in front of the television so as not to miss any minute of the game.

And you know what? It also saddens me whenever I see one of the many players on my favorite team injured. They really look pitiful wearing a knee support for basketball, though for certain, they would eventually be okay. By the way, my teams are Chicago Bulls and North Carolina Tar Heels. Who’s yours?

Black Snake

It was the 4th of July weekend when the husband and my son went to the woods up on our backyard to look for berries. I was just looking at them from the back deck. They didn't spend much time in there and headed back to the house in a few minutes.

My son was only a few feet towards the house when saw this black snake lying near our oil tank. He was like a foot away from the snake when he saw it. Gladly, he didn't step on it. I thought it was a big earthworm from afar. Yikes!

It looks scary, isn't it? I took this photo from the back deck. I think the snake is about four feet long.

Nature in My Own Front Yard

I was busy reading about insurance policies at http://www.wholesaleinsurance.net/ when I heard the neighbor’s dog barking like crazy. I looked out the window checking what she was barking at. When I looked, I was so surprised and delighted at the same time to see deer. There was a doe and two fawns and they were in our front yard.

That was the first time that I saw them and I got so giddy that I ran to get my camera and, gladly, they were still there when I got back so I was able to take snapshots. I will share those photos soon. (“,)

He’s Been True to His Words

All throughout my love life, there is one thing that I never got to experience having and that’s having a promise ring. I am not making a big thing out of it though because I am already married and, besides, I am wearing both an engagement ring and a wedding ring on my ring finger. I was just saying that because I read about promise rings on makemypromisering.com and it makes me feel like I missed something in my life and I want to have one too. Hee hee.

Nevertheless, even without a promise ring, my husband has kept his promises and that’s simply the most important thing.

The waterfall that you are seeing below was what we saw when we checked on this garden establishment near here. This is one of the many things that I want to have in my dream outdoor garden.

Groundhog Day

Literally, I should say. And I am not talking about the day of celebration. The "day" I was referring to was the day when I saw this good neighbor of ours closely. It is living underneath our tool shed and though I saw it a couple of times before, this was the day that I saw it so close. It is always hiding under the shed most of the time.

I was wondering that day why our neighbor's dog was barking. I looked out of the window to see who he's barking at. When I look at the direction, this was what I saw.

He was never moved by the dog's bark.

G’bye To His Ratty Ol’ Jeans

After debating for a while, my husband finally agreed on my point. And for sure you wouldn’t be able to guess what the debate was about. Well, it was to buy him a pair of jeans. He is really a typical guy who doesn’t like shopping at all. Good thing I love shopping because if not, what’s going to happen to him. I think he will be wearing the same old worn out jeans for the rest of his life. LOL.

I bought him a pair of rocawear jeans a couple of days before our trip to Washington, D.C. and I couldn’t have been happier. Whew!

A Leisurely Day

Today was another day of pampering for me. The only difference is, I was not at the spa, but enjoying it in the comfort of our own home. I had my hair dyed by the husband. Yes, he’s my newly-hired hairdresser, and today was supposed to be his day, Father’s Day. LOL.

I had a bubble bath after that using my new skin care products from the husband which include dead sea minerals and foaming bath beads. I felt renewed and rejuvenated afterwards. What a nice feeling.

So who says you can’t bring the spa in your new home? Teehee.

Daddy Longlegs

I am not sure if we have this kind of spider back in my home country because I haven't heard of it there. I only got to learn about it here because they have been around since spring started. Our yard is surrounded with trees and all kinds of plants so insects are just everywhere.

Isn't it a unique name for a spider? I had to ask my husband to say it again the first time I've heard of it because I thought he was simply talking about his legs. LOL.

My Get-Up-and-Go Had Got Up and Left!

I felt so sluggish this morning and I was too lazy to get up. I’m normally out of bed between 6 to 7 o’clock in the morning, but I got up at 8 o’clock today. I still didn’t want to get up actually, but I knew I had to.

But guess what? I felt energized after breakfast. I never thought I would be wired up and would feel like doing any household work. I washed the rugs and mopped the floors in both bathrooms and cleaned the sinks too. I think all I need is some exercise. I am not into it, but I think it’s time for me to consider it. That zumba for kinect would be best, no doubt. I’ll read more on that.

I’ve heard and read about it countless times, but I still wonder why people fall into such trap. I am talking about substance abuse where not only ordinary people are getting affected, but even the rich and famous.

I guess you know who the latest actor is who fall into the trap. He’s life is a total wreck now because of the wrong path he took. I would think there’s a need for him to get into an inpatient substance abuse treatment. Whatever the case, I hope he’ll be back to his usual self soon.

The Diana Chronicles

After the much talked-about wedding of the century of Prince William and Kate Middleton, my interest to read a book about the late Princess Diana gave me this itch again. I had been wanting to read a book about her even before she died, but I just never saw one in our local libraries back home nor did I get the chance to get myself one. I did see one book of her in one of the bookstores there, but the price was just too expensive for me during that time wherein I was still a stud.

But last weekend, I finally put a halt to that itch. We went to the city library for the second time and the book that I missed the first time was already there. The husband was the one who found it and grabbed it instantly. I was busy looking at the children's book section when he told me the news that he found me a Diana book. Boy! I was really delighted!

I am halfway reading the book now and I discovered a lot of things about the Princess that I had never heard of before. It was really a surprising discovery and I can hardly wait to finish the book. I am hooked!

Time Marches On

My son started going back to school once again about a month and a half ago and since then, I wake up as early as 5:30 in the morning during week days to get him ready and prepare his breakfast because the school bus picks him up at 6:45. I wasn’t used to waking up as early as that because back in our home country, his classes started at 12:00 noon. And since we arrived here last year, my waking time would be 7 o’clock. It was an adjustment for my son too because he used to wake up around 10 o’clock.

Good thing we have an alarm clock to wake us up. Teehee. The husband uses one, but we bought one for my son. We bought it a week before he started going back to school along with a modern wall clock that is now placed above the fireplace in the living room. It wasn’t in our plans to buy it, but as soon as we saw it, we knew, we should have it. That was certainly a good buy and it looks good in our living room.

I Think It Looks Better

I mop our kitchen floor like two to three times a week. Yesterday was the last time I did it and I don’t like how it looks. Some parts of the linoleum are so worn out. The husband’s plan of changing to tiles hasn’t materialized yet because he’s been so busy.

He wants tile and has already bought some even though I like laminate flooring better, like the BestLaminate.net pergo flooring that I have seen online. He had already bought tiles before I told him about it though so I‘ll just have to live with it.

An Oak Tree?

I don't know what kind of tree this is. I am just guessing that it is an oak tree. The husband has no idea either. But it was such a lovely tree. This tree was at the backyard of the guy that we visited in Kentucky. It is like a tree that I only see in drawings or paintings or even photos taken by professional photographers. That is why I never had second thoughts of taking a photo of it.

Time to Hit the Trails

Hiking, biking and motorcycling are just some of the things that people enjoy to the fullest during this time of year. Actually, whenever we’re out, there hasn’t been a time that I didn’t see an individual in hiking gear hiking in the vicinity of the city, or one on his bike circling the neighborhood, or one riding his motorcycle zooming down the highways.

We arrived here in autumn of last year and seeing them all this spring has really delighted me. I just love looking at them enjoying the season in their best gear. I wish I could do some hiking too, but I've never done it before. But if someone was to ask me to join them, why not? Perhaps I will give it a try soon. It doesn’t last the whole year, through, and this is the season to make the most of it.

A Bone’s Best Friend

After forgetting about it the past couple of weeks, we finally got some calcium supplements for the little one. His school dietician suggested it for him since he doesn’t drink milk. He has a mild allergy to cow’s milk, so he stays away from drinking it. And since he is not drinking milk which is important for the bones, we were advised to give him calcium supplements.

The husband got him chewable supplements with artificial fruity flavors. My son can be choosy when it comes to supplements, and we’re glad he liked what the husband got him.

Beaver Lake

I don't know why it's called Beaver Lake, but maybe there were beavers there before. The husband has no idea too. We had passed by this lake many times since I arrived here, but it was only this day that we got to walk around it. I already saw it before though because the husband shared some photos with me that he had taken. And this photos that I took below were almost exactly the same spot where my husband took his.

Fireplaces are so Romantic

Our good friend, Carol, took me to Farmer’s Market the other day and oh boy, there were really lots of goodies to take home. They almost got everything there. From plants to meat and fruits, etc. They even have outdoor decors like outdoor fireplaces and all which are really nice.

The gas firepit that I saw reminded me of my girl scout days where we had a bonfire during one of our camping nights. Reminiscing of that night gave me the urge to buy that gas firepit. Maybe I will. I know the husband would love it. We could have a special romantic evening in the great outdoors. (“,)

Ya Snooze, Ya Lose; Oh Well

We went grocery shopping today and as soon as we entered the door, there were about three tradeshow booths lined up near the door. I don’t know if they were siegel tradeshow booths, but they never fail to catch my attention.

While the husband was busy shopping for meat, I busied myself checking one of the booths that sells munchies and goodies. I didn’t see anything that I liked, though, so I left empty handed. I did think of getting one of the sweets, but I decided not to. But thinking about it now makes me want some. Duh! Too late now, eh?

Big Black Tree Ants

Almost everything here is really big. LOL. After seeing the huge vegetables they've got which is way bigger that what we have in my home country, this is the next big thing that I discovered. Tree ants! Glad they've black and not red. It would have been a big pain once they bite. Hee hee.

This is what spring brings. Insects, critters and etc. galore! I saw this black ant on our bathroom sink one day. And as per the husband, it's a tree ant. So big eh! Can you tell? Just look at my finger.

I know he's harmless and friendly...

Was there a time in your life that you were harassed because of your debt? That issue has made headlines in the news recently because one known credit card company not only harassed one person but several individuals.

My mom was one of the unfortunates. Her payment was delayed because of unavoidable circumstances and there was a representative calling her everyday and actually threatened to take legal action. That was such a disrespectful and not-so-classy act for a company which claims to be a top consumer-friendly establishment. My mom was literally bombarded with annoying calls until that kind of harassment was brought to attention on national television by a group of individuals who were victims of same actions and the proper authorities put a halt to it.

Now, I’ve heard about this NCO Financial harassment. If you are a victim, you definitely can ask for help to stop such abusive acts. Know who to call. You deserve respect after all.

Hurry Home, Honey; You’ve Got Work to Do!

It’s only been two months or so, but one of the casters that my husband bought for our swivel chair fell off. But the caster is not the problem but the screws that attach it to the base of the chair.

I was sitting on the chair about an hour ago when the chair tilted. I checked it right away, but I can’t do anything about it. I am not a fixer-upper like the husband and he is at work yet, so he will have to fix it when he gets home. For now, I have to make use of our plastic stool just so I have something to sit on.
